Memory Verse Ideas

Balloon Line

Materials:

  1. One clothespin for each word in the memory verse
  2. One balloon for each word in the memory verse
  3. 1 metre of 0.5cm thick rope/cord
  4. Black marker

Preparation:

  1. Inflate the balloons
  2. Write each word of the memory verse on a separate balloon
  3. Use clothespins to attach the balloons to the rope. Place the balloons in the correct order so the children can read the memory verse.

Game Rules:

  1. Select two children to come to the front of the classroom and hold the rope.
  2. Divide the children into two teams: Team A and Team B (for example, a boys’ team and a girls’ team).
  3. Choose a child from Team A to stand and say the memory verse.
  4. Award team points if the child says the verse correctly.
  5. Pop one of the balloons.
  6. Choose a child from Team B to stand and say the memory verse. Proceed through steps 4 and 5.
  7. Continue playing the game until you have popped all the balloons and the children are saying the verse by memory.
  8. The team with the most points wins.

Baseball Throw

Materials:

  1. Three rubber balls or Nerf balls
  2. Poster board
  3. Black marker
  4. Masking tape

Preparation:

  1. From the poster board, cut cards approximately 10cm x 50cm. Cut as many cards as there are words in the memory verse.
  2. Fold the cards in half so they stand like tepees.
  3. Write each word of the memory verse on a card.
  4. Place the cards in sequential order across the front of the classroom.
  5. Place the balls at the front of the classroom.
  6. Place three or four tape lines about 15cm apart on the floor, designating the distance for players of different ages.

Game Rules:

  1. Divide the children into two teams: Team A and Team B (for example a boys’ team and a girls’ team).
  2. Direct the children to say the memory verse two or three times.
  3. Choose a child from Team A to come to the front of the classroom and say the memory verse.
  4. Give the child a ball. The child has three chances to knock over a card.
  5. Award the child a prize or team points if he or she knocks over a card.
  6. Award the child’s team points if he or she says the verse correctly.
  7. Choose a child from Team B to come to the front of the classroom. Proceed through steps 4, 5 and 6. Increase the number of team points you award each time, since there are fewer words standing and the verse becomes harder to say.
  8. Continue playing the game until all the cards are knocked down.
  9. The team with the most points wins.

Beanbag Toss

Materials:

  1. Three beanbags
  2. Poster board
  3. Black marker
  4. Masking Tape

Preparation:

  1. From the poster board, cut cards approximately 15cm x 40cm. Cut as many cards as there are words in the memory verse.
  2. Fold the cards in half and stand them like tepees.
  3. Write each word of the memory verse on a card.
  4. Place the cards in sequential order across the front of the classroom.
  5. Place the beanbags at the front of the classroom.
  6. Place three or four tape lines about 15cm apart on the floor designating the distance for players of different ages.

Game Rules:

  1. Divide the children into two teams: Team A and Team B (for example, a boys’ team and a girls’ team).
  2. Direct the children to say the memory verse two or three times.
  3. Select a child from Team A to come to the front of the classroom and say the memory verse.
  4. Give the child three beanbags, one for each chance to knock over a card.
  5. Award the child a prize or team points if he or she knocks over a card.
  6. Award the child’s team points if he or she says the verse correctly.
  7. Choose a child from Team B to come to the front of the classroom. Proceed through steps 4, 5 and 6. Increase the number of team points you award each time, since there are fewer words standing and the verse becomes harder to say.

Card Line

Materials:

  1. 1 metre of 0.5cm thick rope/cord

  2. Write each word of the memory verse on a separate card.
  3. Use clothespins to attach the cards to the rope in sequential order.

Game Rules:

  1. Select two children to come to the front of the classroom and hold the rope.
  2. Divide the children into two teams: Team A and Team B (for example, a boys’ team and a girls’ team).
  3. Choose a child from Team A to stand and say the memory verse.
  4. Award team points if the child says the verse correctly.
  5. Remove one card from the rope.
  6. Choose a child from Team B to come to the front of the classroom and say the memory verse. Proceed through steps 4 and 5.
  7. Continue playing the game until you have removed all the cards and the children are saying the verse by memory.
  8. The team with the most points wins.
Disappearing Words

Materials:

  1. White board
  2. Markers for the white board
  3. Eraser

Preparation:

  1. Write the memory verse on the white board

Game Rules:

  1. Divide the children into two teams: Team and Team B (for example, a boys’ team and a girls’ team).
  2. Choose a child from Team A to stand and say the memory verse.
  3. Award team points if the child says the verse correctly.
  4. Erase one word from the white board.
  5. Choose a child from Team B to stand and say the memory verse. Proceed through steps 3 and 4.
  6. Continue playing until you have erased all the words and the children are saying the verse by memory.
  7. The team with the most points wins.

Goin’ Fishin’

Materials:

  1. 1 metre of 0.5cm thick rope/cord
  2. Clothespins
  3. Yellow poster board
  4. Black marker

Preparation:

  1. Use the poster board to cut out fish shapes. Cut out as many fish as there are words in the memory verse.
  2. Write each word of the memory verse on a fish.
  3. Use clothespins to attach the fish to the rope in sequential order.

Game Rules:

  1. Tell the boys and girls that they can catch something good from the Word of God.
  2. Select two children to come to the front of the classroom and hold the string of fish.
  3. Divide the children into two teams: Team A and Team B (for example, a boys’ team and a girls’ team).
  4. Choose a child from Team A to stand and say the memory verse.
  5. Award team points if the child says the verse correctly.
  6. Remove one fish from the string.
  7. Choose a child from Team B to stand and say the memory verse. Proceed through steps 5 and 6.
  8. Award team points if the child says the verse correctly.
  9. Continue playing the game until you have removed all the fish and the children are saying the verse by memory.
  10. The team with the most points wins.
