Unable to fly to Cambodia for our annual service trip due to travel restrictions, the Nunawading Christian College Year 10 students decided to ‘run’ there instead!
‘Run for Cambodia’ was the first of many fundraising initiatives that NCC students led, determined to still help our sister school, Light of Hope, despite not being able to visit this year. In seven days they ran, walked and rode 224km, representing the distance between NCC to Tullamarine Airport, then from Phnom Penh Airport to Light of Hope in Cambodia. Before the week was over, they had already met their $10,000 goal and decided to aim higher!
Putting their creativity into action, within the lockdown restrictions, they worked from home to open an online store – ‘Shop for Cambodia’ – where they sold handmade hair scrunchies, bucket hats, customised face masks and clay keyrings. Once they returned on campus, the Year 10 class set up a car wash, offering a thorough exterior and interior clean for staff cars. And they also then initiated a school wide casual day fundraiser. Their final fundraising venture was a water play afternoon for different year levels to participate in. There was a slippery slide, buckets of water and sponges for our students to engage in some fun in the sun!
We are so proud of our Year 10 students for their leadership and hearts for serving and loving others, seen throughout this year.
They have now raised a total of $14,250 for Light of Hope and are aiming to reach $15,000. Their efforts will fund food security ventures including a fish farm, mushroom production, cow breeding and fruit trees.
“NCC Year 10 students – your efforts are astounding!! In the midst of so much yourself, you have given so much to some who have so little. On behalf of Light of Hope and all the precious kids you have invested in, we thank you with all our hearts.” – Sheree Hughes, Light of Hope
